Apophyllite is of hydrothermal origin and usually occurs in cavities and fractures of basaltic volcanic rocks as a secondary mineral. Perhaps the whitest of all gems, some cut specimens are so devoid of colour they can appear almost silvery. Fluorapophyllite-(K) is the most commonly found type.It is classed tetragonal and has a hardness of 4.5-5 on the Mohs scale.
