What is often called "Charoite" is actually a rock with a high-charoite content. Charoite is a rare complex silicate mineral often with exceptional chatoyance. Its sought after swirling pattern is due to its fibrous crystals arrayed in complex, interlocking patterns. Charoite is found only in one remote place in Russia, and forms from limestone (due to the process of contact metamorphism). Charoite is classed monoclinic and has a hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale.
