Jasper is an opaque, solid or patterned variety of cryptocrystalline Quartz. The names of specific kinds typically come from the colours, patterns, and sometimes a place where it's found. Since Jasper is cryptocrystalline, its trigonal crystals are only seen under a microscope. Jasper has a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale.
