Petrified Wood forms when woody stems of plants/trees are buried in wet sediments saturated with dissolved minerals. The lack of oxygen slows decay of the wood, allowing minerals (primarily silicate of Quartz) to replace cell walls and to fill void spaces in the wood. It is essentially fossilized plant material.
It is classed trigonal and has a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale.
