Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz with a trigonal crystal system. As Amethyst crystals are forming, varying amounts of iron and other trace elements are incorporated. Later, radiation emitted by the surrounding rock modify the iron to produce the purple color. Quartz crystals are among the earliest talismans. Every culture on Earth has attributed magical powers to Quartz crystals.
