Emerald is a chromium-bearing beryllium aluminum silicate. To be an emerald, it must have a distinctly green colour. For over 5000 years, they have been one of the most desirable and valuable coloured stones. Emerald is classed hexagonal and has a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale.
